The beautiful, pristine Chetco River is one of five Wild and Scenic Rivers in the Siskiyou National Forest. The Chetco River stretches 55 miles from the rugged wilderness areas to the Pacific Ocean between Brookings and Harbor, Oregon.

Azalea park is a thirty-three acre park containing ancient native azaleas that were growing here when Lewis and Clark wintered on the Oregon Coast in 1805-06. Azalea Park offers active and passive recreational activities. It lies amongst several residential neighborhoods, but manages to preserve unique landscapes and open spaces. Azalea Park, however, is much more than both of those things. It is a community project that supports Brookings' claim to be "The City of Volunteers'.

Your first impression of Harris Beach State Park will be a locale with marvelously varied terrain. You can walk the beach and run from the waves. Climb to the top of a large rock for a great view, while resisting the temptation to add your graffiti to a small one. You will want to stroll on adjacent beaches that are crowded with sea gulls but secluded enough for a secret romantic interlude. Feel free to search the low tide for black turban snails, california mussels, sea stars and the occasional octopus, just be sure to look and not touch.

Just a fifteen minute drive north east of Brookings lies one of the most beautiful areas in Oregon. It runs beside the Chetco River which rises inland and flows fifty leisurely miles down to the Pacific and the Port of Brookings Harbor. The gateway to this natural jewel is Loeb State Park. Loeb sits on the bank of the Chetco River nestled in a Myrtlewood forest. A gorgeous eight mile drive will carry you from Brookings to the Myrtlewood grove.

Lone Ranch Beach is located 4 and a half miles north of Brookings. Once there, you will take in the collection of sea stack jutting from an ocean whose color changes from hour to hour as the sun, clouds and lighting varies. This part of the Oregon coast has more of these impressive off-shore rock piles than almost any other spot on the Pacific Coast. They provide a rugged contrast to the flatness and color of the ocean.

Whaleshead Beach is one of the most gorgeous locations along the Oregon Coast. Offshore there is a sea stack that looks like the head of a Whale. The sea stack is cut with a rock channel and when a wave hits it, it spurts a spray that actually looks like a whale spouting, hence the name Whaleshead Beach.
