The Chetco Pelican Players are pleased to Present Athenry at the Chetco Playhouse.
Amidst the social chaos that accompanied the most devastating food shortage Ireland had ever seen, when a people who were already subsistence survivors began to see death more commonly than life, the goodness of human character was threatened. This is the story of a love and human respect too powerful to die, and a prevailing spirit that overcomes the greatest obstacles.
Mary is hiding her pregnancy in the face of growing hunger. Michael, once strong, is getting edgy as he works sixteen-hour days on a government wage-generating project. As they watch wagonloads of Irish-produced food go down to the shipyards, their fortitude is tested. Desmond, Michael’s old friend, is ever good-humored and loyal, and his brother, Martin, tries to keep them from trouble. The one ally that Michael and Mary might have is an enemy. Spirited Mary wants to flee to America and Michael wants to stay and fight. As it becomes apparent that their children are becoming weaker, both of them are driven to extremes.
