One mile north of the California State Line and six miles south of downtown Brookings, lies the mouth of the southernmost of Oregon's rivers, the Winchuck. The Winchuck courses along the Oregon side of the common border of the two states.
Where the River Meets the Sea
Situated at the mouth of the Winchuck is a seldom visited state recreation site. Fishing, exploring, clamming, strolling, photographing seascapes and marine life observation are just some of the free activities available to visitors who happen upon this site. After watching act one of the spectacle nature offers where fresh water meets saltwater, you can take in act two up river.
Where the River Meets the Trees
A gorgeous, winding seven mile drive inland allows you to take in the same river flowing through the beautiful Siskiyou National Forest. Leave the state recreation site and travel less than half a mile north. Turn inland at Winchuck River road and go seven enchanting miles. You will come to the Winchuck Campground. Located adjacent to the Winchuck River, this barrier free campground boasts restroom facilities, a river access trail, campsites, picnic and parking areas, drinking water, fire rings and an on site camp host. Overnight camping is available if you have a tent, camper or small trailer.
Rent a Travel Trailer
A nice addition at the campground is a twenty-eight foot travel trailer available for rental with reservations. The site host will also provide you information on another nearby visitor opportunity, First Camp on the Winchuck River. Also convenient are hiking opportunities on both wheelchair accessible and more strenuous day hike trails. The Winchuck campground staff can direct you to close at hand Ludlum House. This is a newly constructed, two story, group use recreation rental which is located at Ludlum Campground, just two miles past the Winchuck Campground. Whether you are seeking ocean vistas or forest murmurs, visit the up river and oceanside banks of the Winchuck River. They are front row seats at a multiple act entertainment that will delight your senses and enrich your visit to Brookings.
Getting There
The entrance to the public access to state recreation site on the Winchuck lies immediately north of the Winchuck River Bridge a mile north of the California border on Highway 101. At the end of a short, unmarked stretch of pavement a parking area overlooks the confluence of the Winchuck and the Pacific Ocean.
